Matcha Milkshake Recipe: Thick, Creamy Green Tea Shake in 5 Minutes

A matcha milkshake is thicker and richer than a matcha frappe, made primarily with ice cream rather than just ice. The result is an indulgent, café-quality drink that is surprisingly easy to make at home. This recipe is popular with children and adults alike, and works well as a dessert drink at Eid gatherings or family celebrations. Classic Matcha Milkshake

1.5 teaspoons

Hot water (80 degrees)

2 tablespoons

Vanilla ice cream

3 large scoops

Milk

100ml

Honey or sugar

1 tablespoon

Ice cubes

Small handful (optional)

 

Method

1.    Whisk matcha with hot water until completely smooth. Allow to cool slightly.

2.    Add matcha paste, ice cream, milk, and sweetener to blender.

3.    Blend for 20 to 30 seconds until thick and smooth.

4.    Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.

5.    Pour into a chilled glass. Top with a swirl of whipped cream and a dusting of matcha powder.


TIP:  For the thickest milkshake, use cold ice cream straight from the freezer and blend as briefly as possible. Over-blending warms the ice cream and makes the shake runny.

 

Premium Matcha Milkshake

For a more intense matcha flavour and a green colour striking enough to photograph, increase the matcha and use a higher grade.

Matcha ice cream or vanilla

3 scoops

Coconut milk

100ml

Honey

1.5 tablespoons

 

6.    Whisk matcha with hot water until smooth.

7.    Blend with coconut milk, ice cream, and honey for 20 seconds.

8.    Pour into a glass and serve immediately before the colour fades.

 

Matcha Banana Milkshake

Add a ripe banana to the classic recipe for extra creaminess and natural sweetness. The banana also adds nutritional value and reduces the need for added sweetener.

*      Add 1 ripe banana to the blender with all other ingredients

*      Reduce honey to half a tablespoon as the banana provides natural sweetness

*      This version is particularly popular with children

How do I stop my matcha milkshake from being lumpy?

Always whisk the matcha with a small amount of hot water to form a smooth paste before blending. Never add matcha powder directly to cold milk or ice cream as it will not dissolve and you will get green clumps throughout the shake.
