Ceremonial vs Culinary Matcha: Which Grade Do You Actually Need
Share
The ceremonial vs culinary grade distinction is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of buying matcha. Many people assume they need ceremonial grade for everything, leading to unnecessary expense. Others use culinary grade for drinking and wonder why their matcha tastes harsh. This guide gives you the clear, honest answer on which grade is right for each use. For our complete grade overview, see the Matcha Grades guide.
Matcha.bd offers both culinary and ceremonial grades with Cash on Delivery across Bangladesh. No need to pay for a grade you do not need.
The Core Difference: How and Why They Are Made Differently
Ceremonial Grade
Ceremonial grade matcha is made from the youngest leaves at the very tip of the shaded tea plant, harvested once a year during the first spring flush. These leaves have the lowest tannin content, highest L-Theanine concentration, most natural sweetness, and most vibrant green colour of the entire plant. They are stone-ground slowly, at the lowest heat, to preserve every delicate flavour compound.
The result is a matcha designed to be consumed straight: whisked with water and drunk without milk, sweetener, or other additions. The flavour is complex enough to stand on its own.
Culinary Grade
Culinary grade matcha uses older leaves from lower positions on the plant, sometimes from later harvests in the season. These leaves have a more robust, stronger flavour with higher tannin content. The flavour is bolder and slightly more bitter than ceremonial grade.
This is not inferior matcha. It is matcha designed for a different purpose: to perform well when mixed with other ingredients. The stronger flavour holds up in milk, blended drinks, and baked goods without being overwhelmed.

When to Choose Ceremonial Grade
Choose 6A Ceremonial Grade (Tk 999) or Uji 1 Ceremonial Grade (Tk 1,750) when:
* You want to drink matcha straight: whisked with just water, no milk, no sweetener
* You want to taste the natural, complex flavour of matcha at its finest
* You are buying as a gift and want to give something that feels premium
* You are a matcha enthusiast building a daily ritual around pure matcha preparation
* You want the absolute highest L-Theanine content for maximum calm focus
When to Choose Culinary Grade
Choose 3A Organic Culinary Grade (Tk 399) when:
* You are making matcha lattes with milk and sweetener
* You are blending matcha into smoothies, protein shakes, or overnight oats
* You are baking: matcha cake, cookies, cheesecake, pancakes
* You are using matcha at a cafe or in high-volume daily preparations
* Budget is a consideration for daily use
The Most Common Mistake: Using the Wrong Grade
Ceremonial Grade in Lattes
Using 6A or Uji 1 ceremonial grade matcha in a latte with milk and honey is a waste of money. The delicate, nuanced flavour of ceremonial grade is almost entirely masked by milk and sweetener. You are paying 2.5 times more for a flavour you will not fully taste.
Culinary Grade Drunk Straight
The reverse mistake: using 3A Culinary Grade matcha with just water, without milk. The higher tannin content of culinary grade makes it significantly more bitter when not balanced with milk or sweetener. The flavour experience is disappointing compared to drinking a properly selected grade straight.
What About Premium Grade: The Middle Option
Our 5A Premium Grade Matcha (Tk 699) sits between ceremonial and culinary. It is smooth enough to drink straight without excessive bitterness, versatile enough for excellent lattes, and priced reasonably for daily use. For most Matcha.bd customers, 5A Premium is the optimal grade because it covers both drinking and latte use well at a practical price point.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is ceremonial grade matcha worth the extra cost?
Yes, but only if you drink matcha straight with just water. For lattes and cooking, ceremonial grade offers no meaningful benefit over culinary grade and costs significantly more.
Can I use culinary grade matcha for drinking?
Yes, as a latte with milk and sweetener. For drinking straight with just water, culinary grade is noticeably more bitter and less pleasant than ceremonial or premium grade.
What is the difference between 6A and Uji 1 ceremonial grade?
Both are ceremonial grade. Uji 1 is specifically sourced from the Uji region of Kyoto, Japan's most prestigious matcha-growing area. It offers superior sweetness, complexity, and colour compared to standard 6A ceremonial grade.
