Pure Matcha: How to Identify Authentic Matcha and Avoid Fakes in Bangladesh
Share
Not everything labelled matcha in Bangladesh is pure, authentic matcha. As the category has grown, so has the number of products that use the matcha name while selling something significantly inferior. This guide teaches you exactly how to identify pure, authentic matcha: what to look for, what to avoid, and how to verify quality when your order arrives. For more on where authentic matcha comes from, see our Japanese vs Chinese Matcha guide.
INFO: Pure matcha has one ingredient: stone-ground Japanese green tea leaves. Nothing else.
What Is Pure Matcha?
Pure matcha is 100 percent stone-ground Japanese green tea leaf powder, with no additives, no fillers, no artificial colouring, and no blending with other ingredients. The vivid green colour comes entirely from the natural chlorophyll in the shade-grown leaves, not from added colourants.
The moment anything is added beyond ground tea leaves, the product is no longer pure matcha. It may still be a useful product, but it should not be labelled or priced as pure matcha.
What Is Sold as Matcha That Is Not Pure Matcha?
Green Tea Powder
The most common substitute. Regular green tea leaves are ground (usually by machine rather than stone) and sold as matcha or green tea matcha. The flavour is more bitter and flat, the colour duller and more yellowish, and the nutritional profile significantly inferior. L-Theanine content is much lower because the leaves are typically not shade-grown.
Matcha Blends
Some products blend a small percentage of genuine matcha with cheaper green tea powder, rice powder, or other fillers. They may taste vaguely like matcha and have some green colour but are sold at prices that should be impossible for genuine matcha.
Artificially Coloured Powder
Products with added green colouring agents to simulate the vivid green of high quality matcha. The colour may look right initially but behaves differently when whisked with water and the flavour is completely wrong.
Old or Improperly Stored Matcha
Even genuine matcha that has been stored incorrectly or is past its peak oxidises and turns yellowish-brown. It is no longer pure in terms of quality even if it was genuine originally. Old matcha loses its L-Theanine content, EGCG antioxidants, and flavour.
How to Identify Pure Authentic Matcha: 5 Checks
Check 1: Colour
Pure, fresh, high-quality matcha is a vivid, almost luminous green. The colour should look alive and bright. Dull, yellowish, brownish, or khaki-coloured powder is a clear signal of poor quality, old stock, machine grinding, or non-shade-grown leaves.
TIP: Test before buying: if the product photo shows dull or yellowish green powder, do not buy it as matcha, regardless of what it is labelled.
Check 2: Ingredient List
Read the full ingredient list. Authentic pure matcha has exactly one ingredient: green tea (or matcha green tea or Camellia sinensis leaves or ground matcha). Any additional ingredients are a disqualifier for pure matcha.
Check 3: Origin Verification
The label or product description should specify Japan as the origin country. Accept no substitute: matcha is Japan's quality standard. Vague descriptions like imported or premium without specifying Japan should be treated with suspicion.
Check 4: Grade Transparency
Authentic matcha sellers label their product grades clearly. If a product is described only as premium matcha or ceremonial matcha with no specific grade number or any information about the leaf quality, the seller is either uninformed or intentionally vague about what they are selling.
Check 5: Price Reasonableness
Genuine 5A Premium Japanese matcha below Tk 500 for 30g is almost certainly not what it claims to be. Production costs for genuine shade-grown, stone-ground Japanese matcha make these prices economically impossible for authentic product.
How to Test Matcha Quality When It Arrives?
The Water Test
1. Sift half a teaspoon of matcha into a cup
2. Add 60ml of water at 75 degrees Celsius
3. Whisk for 20 seconds
Pure matcha should dissolve completely to create a smooth, evenly coloured green liquid with fine froth. Grainy residue at the bottom indicates industrial grinding. A dull or yellowish colour indicates poor quality or age.
The Taste Test
Taste the matcha with just water. Pure, quality matcha should be smooth with natural sweetness and a pleasant umami depth. Harsh, sharp bitterness (not just mild astringency) at correct water temperature (75 to 80 degrees) indicates tannin-heavy lower quality leaves or non-shade-grown product.
The Texture Test
Rub a small amount of matcha between thumb and forefinger. Authentic stone-ground matcha is extraordinarily fine and silky, finer than flour. Any grittiness indicates machine grinding or the presence of coarser filler ingredients.

How to Store Matcha to Keep It Pure?
Even genuine matcha deteriorates quickly without proper storage. Our ceramic airtight matcha storage jar (Tk 790) is specifically designed to maintain freshness:
* Store in an airtight container away from direct light and heat
* Refrigerate opened matcha for extended freshness, but bring to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation
* Consume within 30 to 60 days of opening
* Use the chashaku spoon rather than a metal spoon to avoid introducing moisture
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I know if my matcha is pure?
Check the ingredient list (one ingredient only), verify Japanese origin, look at the colour (vivid green), feel the texture (silky fine), and taste it with water (smooth, naturally sweet, not harsh).
What does fake matcha taste like?
Low quality or fake matcha typically tastes harsh, sharply bitter, flat, or grassy in an unpleasant way. It often has a dull yellowish-green colour rather than the vivid green of authentic matcha.
Is matcha at Matcha.bd pure?
Yes. All Matcha.bd products are 100% pure Japanese matcha with one ingredient: ground Japanese green tea leaves. No additives, fillers, or colourants.
